Ukrainian parliament doubles national control zone in Black Sea

KYIV. Dec 6 (Interfax) - The Verkhovna Rada has passed a law on the "adjacent zone of Ukraine," which will de facto increase the territory it controls in the Black Sea.

A total of 244 parliamentarians voted for the bill at a plenary session of the parliament on Thursday, an Interfax correspondent reported.

Under the document, the adjacent zone of Ukraine will be the open sea belt adjacent to the Ukrainian territorial sea; the external border will be no more than 24 nautical miles away (counted from the same initial lines and the width of the Ukrainian territorial sea). The Ukrainian territorial waters are 12 miles.

In this territory, Ukraine will take measures needed for to prevent violations of customs, fiscal, migration, and sanitary legislation.
