Georgia shows no understanding of S. Ossetia's stance in Geneva - FM

TSKHINVAL. Dec 11 (Interfax) - South Ossetia has shown readiness to ensure regional security, which is the primary objective of the Geneva Consultations on Security and Stability in the South Caucasus, according to South Ossetian Foreign Minister Dmitry Medoyev.

The new round of the Geneva Consultations will begin on Tuesday.

"Our stance has been unwavering since the first round - the Geneva Consultations should help elaborate security conditions that will rule out a recurrence of Georgia's aggression against South Ossetia and Abkhazia. An agreement on the non-use of force remains the main goal of the consultations," Medoyev said at his annual press conference on Tuesday.

Unfortunately, Georgia has shown no understanding of the South Ossetian stance in Geneva, he said.

It has attempted to shift the emphasis of the agenda, politicize issues, and demonstratively ignore the stance of South Ossetia in Geneva, Medoyev said.

He added that the Geneva Consultations are the only venue where South Ossetia is able to defend its position.

"We are waiting for results, including the resumption of the Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism (IPRM)," Medoyev said.

He said that 2018 has been a busy and pivotal year for South Ossetia's foreign policy.

"The South Ossetian president paid his first visit to the center of Europe in January. It was a real breakthrough. After that, we visited Nauri on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of that member state of many international organizations. We also had interesting trips to Italy, which will be further developed," Medoyev said.

He described Syria's recognition of South Ossetia as the most significant foreign policy event. "The most important event was the recognition of our republic by Syria. We were working to that end for several years. It seems the participation of our delegation led by President Anatoly Bibilov in the Crimean International Forum played a role," he said.

Medoyev also referred to Bibilov's trip to Republika Srpska in Bosnia and Herzegovina, his first visit to Europe. "It was a major breakthrough in Europe. Obviously, our opponents were not happy. But we will continue this work; the policy has been set by our head of state," he said.

South Ossetia remains under blockade despite the information breakthrough on the world stage, Medoyev said.

"It is no longer a secret to many people in Europe who the aggressor was in August 2008. However, our opponents keep creating impediments for us. They will not stop us, and we continue conveying our stance to the world," he said.
