Shoigu arrives in India to discuss Russian-Indian military-technical cooperation priorities

NEW DELHI. Dec 13 (Interfax-AVN) - Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu on Wednesday arrived in India where he and his Indian counterpart Nirmala Sitharaman will chair the 18th session of the intergovernmental commission for military-technical cooperation on December 13.

"During the meeting the parties are planning to take stock of the work over the past year and outline priorities for the development of military-technical cooperation," Shoigu's press secretary Rossiyana Markovskaya told journalists on Wednesday.

The meeting will "also involve a discussion of practicalities on growing bilateral interaction in light of agreements reached during Russian President Vladimir Putin's state visit to India on October 4-5 of this year," she said.

"On the trip to India, the defense minister and defense officials are being accompanied by a representative delegation of defense industry executives," Markovskaya said.

The protocol, to be signed after the meeting, will identify promising areas of cooperation and specify ways of implementing planned projects, she said.

The commission was set up under an intergovernmental agreement of October 3, 2000. It meets once a year, alternating venues between Moscow and New Delhi. Its members are approved by government directives on both sides.
