According to a number of Ukrainian media reports, a convict of the prison in the city of Drohobych died in an accident.
The statement on the Verkhovna Rada human rights commissioner's official website confirmed that Russian citizen Valery Ivanov, who has been held in Drohobych Penitentiary No. 40, has died in an accident.
"According to the Drohobych local prosecutor's office, on December 9, Valery Ivanov, who stayed at a leisure room for prisoners, decided to replace a light bulb. To this end, he climbed the folding ladder, but lost balance and fell on his back. He hit a recycle bin by the back of his head and died of this blow," according to the statement.
Prosecutors launched a criminal inquiry into the death of Ivanov under Part 1 of Article 115 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code designating it as "an accident."
Final findings of the forensic examination are expected to be received in a month.
Verkhovna Rada First Deputy Speaker and Ukrainian envoy to the Trilateral Contact Group's humanitarian subgroup Iryna Herashchenko said that the Russian man, who has died in a Ukrainian penitentiary, fought in eastern Ukraine against Ukrainian troops, and was convicted for that, but, according to her, Russia refused to take him in exchange for a Ukrainian prisoner.
