Reduced threshold for use of nukes could lead to global catastrophe - Putin

MOSCOW. Dec 20 (Interfax) - The reduction of the threshold for the use of nuclear weapons could lead to a nuclear catastrophe, Russian President Vladimir Putin said.

"There is a tendency toward the reduction of the threshold for the use of [nuclear weapons]. There are ideas on creating low-capacity nuclear weapons. This isn't global [use] anymore, it's tactical use," Putin said at his annual press conference.

"But the reduction of the threshold could lead to a global nuclear catastrophe," he said.
