Proportion of modern weapons in Russian army soars to 61.5% in 2018, to reach 70% by 2020 - Shoigu

MOSCOW. Dec 24 (Interfax-AVN) - The Russian army this year has reached an unprecedented rate of possession of modern weapons which now accounts for 61.5% of its total arsenal, and the figure will be further increased to 70% by 2020, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said.

"Overall, we have received over 1,500 models of weapon and over 80,000 pieces of equipment. This is a huge figure. In total, by the rate of modernity we have reached 61.5 per cent. Such a level of modernity is not characteristic of, or present in, any of the world's armies today," Shoigu told the ministry's public council on Monday.

"We are hoping to reach the 67% rate of modernity in 2019, and by 2020 to have reached our goal of 70% for modernity," he said.

"Progress towards the goal, set from the start during preparation and implementation of the 2010-2020 state armament program, is going as planned," Shoigu said.
