Fallen crane removed from Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier - source

MOSCOW. Dec 28 (Interfax) - The crane that fell on the deck of the Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier when the ship was leaving a floating dock at the repair plant in Murmansk has been removed, an informed source told Interfax on Friday.

"The crane has been removed from the deck. Work is underway on the aircraft carrier according to the plan of repairs," the source said.

One of the world's largest floating docks, PD-50, sank at the 82nd Ship Maintenance Plant in Roslyakovo, Murmansk, early on October 30, after the departure of the Admiral Kuznetsov. A floating dock crane fell on the carrier's deck.

The incident left four workers injured, one of whom died later in hospital. One person was reported missing.

The Admiral Kuznetsov was moved to the 35th Ship Maintenance Plant, an affiliate of the USC's Zvyozdockha, which was tasked with doing the main repair work.

The damage caused to the aircraft carrier was estimated at 70 million rubles, according to Alexei Rakhmanov, the head of the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC).

The damage will be partly covered by the planned modernization of the ship, Rakhmanov said.

"We are talking about 52 instances of damage, including broken layers and minor fences. Some of the fences were going to be replaced anyway. As for the damage caused to the adjacent spaces as a result of the impact [from the falling crane], some extra work will need to be carried out there. There will be additional expenses, which will be partially covered by the current upgrade budget," Rakhmanov said.

This will not affect the 2021 deadline for modernization, he said.
