MOSCOW. Jan 9 (Interfax-AVN) - The new unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) Grom, which is being created in Russia, will be equipped with a turbojet engine, an informed source told Interfax.
"A new turbojet engine has been created as part of the research and development project," the source said.
The UAV was commissioned by NPO Splav, the source said.
In 2017, Rostec reported that an UAV integrated in rockets of the Smerch multiple rocket launch system (MRLS) will be used for reconnaissance purposes.
Nikolai Makarovets, the chief designer of NPO Splav, a Rostec subsidiary, told reporters that an UAV, which is being incorporated in rockets for the Smerch system, has been created in Russia.
"The idea of a drone integrated in the combat unit of the Smerch MRLS is not new. We conducted technological work at our expense and hope that there will be customers soon. In this case, our forces will receive this equipment as well," Makarovets said.
The Smerch 300 mm long-range multiple rockets system enables opening fire at a distance from 20 to 90 kilometers and strike targets at an area of over 60 hectares. It can fire both single guided missiles and a full salvo from its 12 launching lines.
