Kazakh Mazhilis approves ratification of border regime agreement with Kyrgyzstan

ASTANA. Jan 9 (Interfax) - The Kazakh Mazhilis approved at a plenary meeting on Wednesday the ratification of the border regime agreement between the governments of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, an Interfax correspondent reported.

The agreement was signed in Astana on December 25, 2017.

"The primary objective of the agreement is the mutual establishment of the legal framework and the regulation of relations between Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan on the state border. The agreement envisages the establishment of the regime of the Kazakh-Kyrgyz state border and further strengthening of Kazakhstan's national security," Darkhan Dilmanov, the Border Service Director and Deputy Chairman of Kazakhstan's National Security Committee, said while presenting the bill at the Mazhilis.

The document clarifies border rules and regulations for maintaining the state border and letting passengers, vehicles, cargo, and other assets across the state border. It also specifies the procedure of flights over the state border, and economic and other activity on and along the border and within border waters, including their use, he said.

"This is an open-ended agreement which will stay in effect until either party notifies the other party in writing through diplomatic channels of the intention to stop it. In this case, the agreement will expire upon three months since the date of the delivery of such notice," Dilmanov said.

The bill was submitted for consideration by Kazakhstan's Senate.
