Lavrov expects new UN envoy for Syria to maintain continuity in settlement process (Part 2)

MOSCOW. Jan 21 (Interfax) - Moscow expects continuity in its cooperation with newly appointed UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.

"We do value our interaction, the interaction between the Astana-format countries and the UN, in promoting a political process in line with Resolution 2254," Lavrov said at talks with Pedersen in Moscow on Monday.

He praised the special contribution made to these efforts by former UN envoy Staffan de Mistura.

"So we're counting on continuity, counting on your experience working both in institutions in your home country and in international organizations, including the UN," Lavrov said to Pedersen.

Pedersen, a Norwegian diplomat, became the UN envoy for Syria on January 7, 2019. His predecessor, Staffan de Mistura, announced his resignation for personal reasons last fall.
