MOSCOW. Jan 23 (Interfax-AVN) - The 9M729 missile of the Iskander-M mobile short-range missile system features a more powerful warhead and hits targets with a higher precision, according to the Missile Troops and Artillery Commander Lt. Gen. Mikhail Matveyevsky.
"The 9M729 cruise missile is a modernized modification of the 9M728 cruise missile of the Iskander-M system. Modernization of the 9M728 cruise missile aimed to raise the potential of the warhead and precision characteristics," Matveyevsky said at a briefing on Wednesday.
He noted that the 9M728 and 9M729 missiles were unified by most of their components.
"The 9M729 missile is carrying a more powerful warhead and a new control system, which enables it to hit targets with a higher precision," Matveyevsky said.
The more powerful warhead and additional equipment placed within a missile of the same diameter make the missile and its transportation-and-launch container longer, he said.
"The transportation-and-launch container grew 53 centimeters," he said.
