Possible withdrawal of U.S. troops from northeastern Syria is positive step - Putin

MOSCOW. Jan 24 (Interfax) - The withdrawal of U.S. troops from northeastern Syrian regions will be a positive step, Russian President Vladimir Putin said.

"That concerned the way further developments of the situation in Syria will affect the U.S. leadership's plans to withdraw American troops from northeastern regions of that country. If these steps, these plans are really put into practice, it will be a positive step," Putin said at a press conference following Russian-Turkish talks.

This step will make it possible to stabilize the situation in that volatile Syrian region, which is under control of Kurdish units, he said.

"In this context, we are supporting the establishment of the dialogue between the official Damascus and Kurdish representatives," Putin said.

"This dialogue will definitely promote the consolidation of Syrian society and national reconciliation, and will benefit not only Syria, but also all of the neighboring countries," he added.
