NALCHIK. Jan 24 (Interfax) - The Russian Investigative Committee's investigative directorate for Kabardino-Balkaria Republic has launched a criminal inquiry into attempt on the life of a law enforcement officer, the agency said on Thursday.
According to the inquiry, at around 6 p.m., when on-duty road patrol inspectors stopped a vehicle on the crossing of Idarov and Suvorov streets in Nalchik, they were approached by four men walking down the sidewalk.
"Taking advantage of the fact that the inspectors concentrated on checking the vehicle, they assaulted them, using knives as weapon. The police officers opened fire at the assailants, eliminating three of them and injuring the fourth," the statement said.
One police officer sustained stab wounds, it said.
