YEREVAN. Jan 28 (Interfax) - The army is the guarantor of security of Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said.
"Our most important task is to address challenges to our security. The Armenian Armed Forces and Artsakh's [Armenia name of Nagorno-Karabakh] Defense Army are the guarantors of security of the Republic of Armenia and Artsakh," Pashinyan said at a meeting with the senior personnel of the Defense Ministry and the command staff of the Armed Forces on Saturday.
"The development of the Armed Forces and the compliance with the modern defense capacity requirements are an absolute priority. We should work to that end, having short-, medium-, and long-term goals, as well as an action strategy," he said.
Armenian Defense Minister Davit Tonoyan, in turn, said that the situation on the frontline has been quite calm since June 2018, owing to efforts of the Armenian political leadership and actions of the Armed Forces.
"I confirm that the army will observe political agreements and, if necessary, compel the enemy to agree to conditions favorable for us," Tonoyan said.
Pashinyan was in Moscow on Friday and in Davos earlier this week. In Switzerland, Pashinyan had an official meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev to discuss issues regarding the negotiating process in the Karabakh settlement.
