Production of new nuclear warhead in U.S. increases threat of nuclear conflict - Lavrov (Part 2)

MOSCOW. Jan 30 (Interfax) - The United States' production of a new low-yield nuclear warhead, the W76-2, increases the threat of a nuclear conflict, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said at a press conference.

"The production of a new low-yield nuclear warhead in the United States was included in Washington's Nuclear Posture Review last year," Lavrov said.

"At the time, we expressed our profound concern about the development of low-yield munitions, which lower the threshold for the use of nuclear weapons and increase the risk of a nuclear conflict," he said.

"Now they are taking practical steps. Of course, this does not deliver security in the modern world," Lavrov said.

It is important to understand "which role Washington assigns to Europe and which role Europe itself is ready to play, given that it played along with the United States' previous unilateral moves, wittingly or not," he said.
