Russian combat robots may be allowed to use weapons independently

MOSCOW. Feb 6 (Interfax-AVN) - Russian combat robots need to be equipped with intellectual systems that will enable them to use weapons independently, the 3rd Central Scientific Research Institute of the Russian Defense Ministry said.

Scientists believe Russian combat robots should become "capable of accomplishing tasks in situations of uncertain external situations (the presence of intellect)."

The scientists' proposals are stated in an article published in the collection Rocket-Technical and Artillery-Technical Support of the Russian Armed Forces in 2018.

The experts suggest "introducing in military robotics intellectual systems for making decisions at command stages, including group, autonomous movement and use of equipment according to its purpose, including weapons."

The scientists believe the military need to develop "methods for analyzing situations, scene identification, and target identification as applied to the functions of ground-based robotic systems."
