Verkhovna Rada approves bill on Ukraine's course toward EU, NATO membership (Part 2)

KYIV. Feb 7 (Interfax) - Ukraine's Verkhovna Rada approved presidential constitutional amendments reaffirming the country's strategic course toward membership in the European Union and NATO at its session on Thursday.

According to an Interfax correspondent, 334 MPs backed the bill.

A bill on constitutional amendments needs at least 300 votes to pass.

Addressing parliamentarians ahead of the vote, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said he is confident that Ukraine will join NATO and the EU.

"Ukraine will gain membership in NATO and the EU through our joint efforts. We are following our own path, and this is the path toward Ukraine's membership in the European Union and NATO," he said.

Ukraine has been reforming its security sector over the past five years and doing everything it can to meet NATO standards, Poroshenko said.
