Russian Foreign Ministry compares U.S.' Moldova policy to actions in Iraq, Libya, Syria

MOSCOW. Feb 12 (Interfax) - The Russian Foreign Ministry has said it is troubled by the United States' involvement in the pre-election situation in Moldova, warning that it could have dangerous consequences for this country.

Immediately after assuming office in the fall of 2018, U.S. Ambassador in Chisinau Dereck Hogan "began taking an active part in Moldovan internal processes," the Russian ministry said in a commentary.

"He publicly supports some politicians over others, and dispenses recommendations on how to hold parliamentary elections. Seeking to predetermine the results of the vote, the Americans intend to assess their democracy depending on who will win. If the winner doesn't suit Washington, they threaten the Moldovans that ties with the West will be severed or even that the Ukrainian Maidan will be repeated," the ministry said.

"These undiplomatic maneuvers of the American ambassador vividly demonstrate the U.S.' habits of not bothering with the principle of sovereignty and of imposing its will on others, combining threats with promises," it said.

"We are strongly opposed to Moldova becoming another field for such irresponsible experiments, which ruined Iraq and Libya and plunged Syria and Ukraine into the vortex of bloody conflicts," it said.
