Ryabkov, French diplomat discuss arms control

MOSCOW. Feb 13 (Interfax) - Consultations on the most pressing issues of non-proliferation and arms control were held in Paris on Tuesday by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov and the French Foreign Ministry's Political Director Nicolas de Riviere, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement posted on its website.

"There was a frank and useful exchange of opinions on the implementation of a number of key treaties and mechanisms, which were the basis of international contacts in this area and served as global security pillars for a long time," the statement said.

"The sides expressed their sincere interest in resolving the crises in the aforesaid areas as quickly as possible, and underlined their aspiration for continuing their joint effort towards strengthening the regime of non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and improving the existent framework of arms control," it said.

"Emphasis was put on the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) for the Iranian nuclear program. The sides pledged their unwavering commitment to the JCPOA and expressed their readiness for a joint search for effective ways of dealing with the challenges hindering its complete fulfillment," the statement said.

Ryabkov also had a separate meeting with French Presidential Diplomatic Advisor Philippe Etienne.
