U.S., EU sanctions over Kerch Strait incident not to improve Russia-West relations, may encourage Kyiv to act unlawfully - Kosachyov

MOSCOW. Feb 13 (Interfax) - New sanctions that the United States and the European Union are preparing to impose on Russia over the incident in the Kerch Strait in November 2018 are dangerous as they might prompt the Ukrainian military to resort to unlawful actions in the strait, Russian Federation Council Foreign Affairs Committee head Konstantin Kosachyov said.

"A dangerous precedent is being set, which certainly wouldn't improve either the situation in the Kerch Strait area or the relationship between Russia and the West, but which could well encourage the Ukrainian military to undertake new feats to illegally 'storm' the strait while it can be easily passed by observing the necessary formalities, but which, however, wouldn't be a call for sanctions and media hysteria," Kosachyov told Interfax on Friday in commenting on media reports that the EU and the U.S. are about to agree upon new sanctions on Russia over the Kerch Strait incident and the arrest of Ukrainian sailors.
