Armenia not planning to join military action in Syria - PM

YEREVAN. Feb 13 (Interfax) - Armenia has no plans for involvement in military action in Syria, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said on Wednesday.

"We have sent a humanitarian mission to Syria. As for the defense minister's reply [on Armenia's possible involvement in military activities], it needs to be clarified what question was asked and in what context this statement was made. We do not have such plans," Pashinyan said in taking questions from parliamentarians while presenting the government's five-year action program.

On Tuesday, when asked about the legality of dispatching an Armenian humanitarian mission to Syria, Armenian Defense Minister Davit Tonoyan said, "We have received a written request from the de facto Syrian authorities to send an Armenian humanitarian mission to Syria. The humanitarian mission is being conducted in accordance with the law."

Tonoyan, however, did not rule out that Armenian forces might be involved in armed actions in Syria.

"I'll add that if there is a need to be involved in military actions under certain circumstances, Armenia will certainly do so, in accordance with the law. I think that to make such a decision, we will also work with Armenia's extraparliamentary forces," Tonoyan said.

It had been reported earlier that a group of 83 Armenian specialists had arrived in Syria on February 8 to provide specialized humanitarian aid to the local population.
