Leaders of Russia, Turkey, Iran to discuss Syria's constitutional committee - Lavrov (Part 2)

SOCHI. Feb 13 (Interfax) - The establishment of Syria's constitutional committee will be discussed at the upcoming summit of Russia, Turkey, and Iran in Sochi, according to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

"Regarding the committee on constitutional reforms, the constitutional committee, it [the issue] will certainly be discussed. It has already been considered at consultations between our experts, who are meeting here today to prepare agreements for the three presidents' tomorrow summit," Lavrov said at a press briefing in Sochi on Wednesday.

In December 2018, the guarantor countries of the Astana process approved a list of candidates to the committee representing Syria's civil society and submitted it to the United Nations. However, Western nations "created impediments to the UN to keep the list from being approved," he said.

"This vulgar, unceremonious, colonial-style interference is a source of deep concern. But we aren't hiding away in our shells and are ready to find a solution," Lavrov said.

"I think we will brief our leaders tomorrow on where the efforts stand. The leaders are due to make a decision on furthering the intra-Syrian dialogue initiative," he said.

"For one thing, those trying to derail our efforts will fail. For another, their only goal is to prove that all decisions must be made by them. This is a selfish attitude which contravenes the interests of the international community," Lavrov said.
