Pushkov on British defense secretary's speech in Munich: such speeches are given before declaring wars

VLADIVOSTOK/MUNICH. Feb 18 (Interfax) - The general tone of the Munich Security Conference demonstrates hostility towards Russia, Alexei Pushkov, the head of the Federation Council's Information Policy Commission, said.

"They are convincing of one thing on a personal level, but we see on the official political level that hostility towards Russia tends to increase," Pushkov said on the 'Moscow. Kremlin, Putin' live program aired on Rossiya-1 (VGTRK) television on Sunday.

He spoke about the speech given at the conference by British Defense Secretary Gavin Williamson, who, according to the senator, gave 'a highly aggressive speech.'

"In my view, such speeches are given before wars are declared," Pushkov said.

The organizers of the conference gave Williamson the floor on the first day, he said. "It was in some sense a program speech. It raises a red flag," Pushkov said.

In his speech at the Munich Security Conference on Friday, Williamson called on the European countries to be ready to fight provocations by Russia.

"Let's deal with Russia's breach of the INF Treaty and the threat of new Russian missiles. Let's be ready to handle their provocations," Williamson said.

"Russian adventurism must have a cost," the minister said.

He said it is obvious that Russia has breached the INF Treaty.

Williamson also spoke about the importance of NATO to the countries of Europe.

"NATO needs to remain the bedrock of our security in Europe [...] Let us all support the world's most successful military alliance in history," he said.

The British defense secretary also called on the UK's allies to unite.
