YEREVAN. Feb 28 (Interfax) - A brother of Armenia's ex-president Serzh Sargsyan has donated around $20 million for the state to buy weapons for national defense.
"For the purpose of fulfilling tax liabilities identified in the framework of a criminal case, [Alexander] Sargsyan paid 3,165,448,706 drams (over $6.5 million) into national budget. Sargsyan also donated $19.6 million, on his own initiative, for the purpose of weapon acquisition for national defense," the country's National Security Service told Armenian media.
Sarsgyan has been charged with massive fraud and is not allowed to travel, it said.
"In addition, a $3,855,760 sum on Sargsyan's bank account has been seized and very soon this money will be used to repay tax liabilities," the service said.
On September 11, 2018 Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan demanded that A. Sargsyan return the money "stolen from the people."
