Frigate Admiral Gorshkov enters Mediterranean Sea - Russia's Northern Fleet

MOSCOW. March 12 (Interfax) - The frigate Admiral Gorshkov, one of the most advanced ships of the Russian Navy, has entered the Mediterranean Sea, the press service of Russia's Northern Fleet told Interfax on Tuesday.

"In the short term, the frigate will be heading the unit of ships in the Mediterranean Sea as part of a long-distance deployment," the press service said.

The unit also includes the multirole supply vessel Elbrus, the rescue towboat Nikolai Chiker and the medium-sized sea tanker Kama.

The Admiral Gorshkov held a series of maneuvers on its way from the Northern Fleet's base to the Mediterranean Sea, the press service said.

"All of them were of a defensive nature - they included computer simulations of the tactical situation and did not use missile and artillery weapons," the press service said.

The Admiral Gorshkov carries Kalibr long-range cruise missiles. According to media reports, the frigate is equipped with a Filin visual interference station, which is designed to "blind" the enemy.
