Eastern Military District's riflemen hold exercises in Kuril islands of Iturup, Kunashir

KHABAROVSK. March 12 (Interfax) - Motorized infantry brigades have begun bilateral tactical exercises on the Eastern Military District's training ranges in the Sakhalin region, the district said in a statement.

"Motorized infantry drills in conducting an offensive in a complex warfare environment have begun on the islands of Iturup and Kunashir," the statement said.

According to the exercise's scenario, mock enemy troops came ashore and set up defense in preparation for the approach of the main force.

"The Eastern Military District's motor riflemen, supported by the T-72B battle tank and the BMP-2 [infantry fighting vehicle] breached the 'enemy' defense and took positions to render the 'adversary' incapable of carrying out maneuvers," the statement said.

Fire support was provided by grenadiers and operators of the 120mm Sani mortar launchers.

The tasks were executed amid active subversive and reconnaissance attempts by the mock enemy.

In total, the drills involve around 500 troops and up to 70 pieces of equipment, it said.
