Western Military District troops training to operate new EW system

MOSCOW. March 12 (Interfax) - The Western Military District's 24th Separate Electronic Warfare (EW) Battalion is being re-trained for the new system, Palantin, which can "blind" an adversary in the short- and ultrashort-wave bands and leave it without cellular network communication, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

"The planned exercise conducted in accordance with the re-training program involved 98 troops," the ministry stated on Tuesday.

The retraining is taking place at an EW troops training and deployment inter-service center in Tambov, it said.

The brand new highly-mobile, tactical-level EW system can suppress existing and prospective hostile radio systems and conduct radio-electronic reconnaissance.

The system can blind an enemy in the short- and ultrashort-wave bands and leave it without cellular network communication. It has a system-forming function, i.e. can combine various EW and radio-electronic systems into a single working network, making it much more effective, the ministry said earlier.

In September the ministry's website stated that Palantin had been tested by Western Military District troops, and announced plans to deliver it to the district's combined arms army's EW units.
