MOSCOW. March 14 (Interfax) - The lawyer of suspected spy Paul Whelan, a citizen of the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Canada, has disagreed with the ruling of the Moscow City Court, which kept Whelan under arrest, and said he will file an appeal with a higher instance court.
"Of course, we will appeal today's decision at a cassation court," lawyer Vladimir Zherebenkov said.
He did not rule out an appeal to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), either.
On February 22, the Lefortovsky District Court in Moscow extended Whelan's arrest until May 28. The ruling was upheld by the Moscow City Court.
"The ruling of Moscow's Lefortovsky District Court of February 22, which extended the arrest of Paul Whelan until May 28, will stay in effect, and the defense's appeal will be dismissed," Judge Yury Pasyunin said.
The Moscow City Court found no grounds to release the suspected spy on bail or put him under house arrest.
