ASTANA. March 20 (Interfax) - Kazakhstan's former parliament speaker Kasym-Zhomart Tokayev took office as president of the country on Wednesday.
Tokayev was sworn in as president at a joint meeting of the parliament chambers.
"I swear to faithfully serve the people of Kazakhstan, strictly follow the Constitution and laws of the Republic of Kazakhstan, guarantee the rights and freedoms of citizens, and conscientiously fulfill the high duties of President of the Republic of Kazakhstan," Tokayev said.
Tokayev has become president of Kazakhstan for the remaining term of the elected president, which expires in April 2020.
