MOSCOW. March 25 (Interfax) - Russia's stance on the belonging of the Golan Heights has remained unchanged, Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov said.
"Russia's and the UN Security Council's stance on the Golan Heights is well-known," he said in reply to a question from the Govorit Moskva radio station.
The Golan Heights have been part of Syria before 1967. Two thirds of the Golan Heights were occupied by Israel during the Six-Day War in early June 1967.
In December 1981, the Israeli parliament passed the law putting the Golan Heights under Israel's jurisdiction.
The UN Security Council did not recognize this decision. The UN General Assembly repeatedly called the annexation illegal and urged Israel to return the Golan Heights.
"It is time for the United States to fully recognize Israel's Sovereignty over the Golan Heights," U.S. President Donald Trump wrote on Twitter on March 21.
Trump's tweet on the Golan Heights may drastically destabilize the situation in the Middle East, Peskov said on March 22.
"Certainly, such calls may significantly destabilize the already tense situation in the Middle East. In any case, this idea in itself absolutely does not help promote the goals and objectives of the Middle East peace process; it does rather the opposite," Peskov told journalists in commenting on the U.S. leader's tweet.
"This is just a call in this particular case. Let's hope it remains only a call," Peskov said.
