NATO sec gen to meet with Georgia's leadership

TBILISI. March 25 (Interfax) - During NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg's visit to Tbilisi the issues related to boosting cooperation between the alliance and Georgia and security in the Black Sea will be addressed, head of the NATO Liaison Office in Georgia Rosaria Puglisi told the Georgian First TV Channel.

Stoltenberg will come to Tbilisi on Sunday, she said. Besides, members of the NATO Military Committee will visit Georgia in the next few days.

"Georgia and NATO are maintaining close relations, and such [relations] have never been seen before. This clearly indicates what work we are doing and how we are supporting Georgia's Euro-Atlantic aspirations," Puglisi said.

Commenting on Russia's negative response to the NATO GEO Exercise 2019 international drills, which are underway in Georgia and which Stoltenberg will personally inspect on Monday, Puglisi said that these maneuvers are not aimed against third countries and do not pursue "any aggression."

"Any activity, in which NATO and Georgia got involved jointly, are absolutely defensive," the head of the NATO Liaison Office said.

Official meetings between the NATO head and Georgian top public officials are scheduled for Monday, the Georgian Foreign Ministry told reporters.

Stoltenberg in particular will meet with Georgian Prime Minister Mamuka Bakhtadze, President Salome Zourabichvili, and Parliament Speaker Irakli Kobakhidze.

The North Atlantic Alliance secretary general will also visit the Georgia-NATO Joint Training and Evaluation Center (JTEC), where the NATO GEO Exercise 2019 international drills are underway since March 18. Servicemen from 24 NATO member states and the alliance's partners are taking part in these drills, which will last until March 29.
