Russian Foreign Ministry describes U.S. call for Russia's withdrawal from Venezuela as legally baseless

MOSCOW. March 28 (Interfax) - The U.S. call for Russia's withdrawal from Venezuela is legally baseless, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said.

"President Trump said during his meeting with Guaido's wife on March 27 that the United States would consider every option to make the Russian military leave Venezuela. Vice-President Pence called on Russia at the same meeting to immediately stop giving any assistance to Maduro," Zakharova said at a press briefing on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Secretary of State Michael Pompeo said that the United States would insist not only on President Maduro's departure from the political scene, but also on the end of Russia's influence on Cuba and Venezuela.

"I'd like to ask those persons a question: what are the legal grounds for these statements? This is the way I'd formulate the question. This question is not rhetorical, and I wish to hear an answer," Zakharova said.
