Georgian parliament concerned about South Caucasus' militarization in light of Russian drills in Abkhazia

TBILISI. April 24 (Interfax) - The Georgian parliament has expressed concern about the exercises conducted by the Russian military in Abkhazia and said that the region is being increasingly militarized.

"We are concerned about generally increasing militarization, which we observe both in Abkhazia and the Tskhinval region. These exercises are one of the manifestations of that," Georgian Parliamentary Speaker Irakli Kobakhidze told journalists on Wednesday.

The international community's support on this matter is important for Georgia, he said.

The Georgian parliament's Deputy Speaker Giorgi Volski, in turn, described the Russian troops' exercises in Abkhazia as "flexing of muscles" and told journalists that it concerns not only Georgia.

"Any actions of such nature are a provocation, a real threat and they concern not only Georgia. The situation is tense on the global scale," Volski said, adding that the Georgian authorities took all these factors into consideration and are trying to maintain stability in the region.
