MOSCOW. April 30 (Interfax) - Leonid Slutsky, head of the Foreign Affairs Committee in Russia's State Duma, has said that Russia will never support a violent upheaval of the current Venezuelan government.
"Russia will never uphold a violent shift of power in the Bolivarian Republic. Only the Venezuelan people may elect the president of Venezuela," Slutsky told reporters on Tuesday.
He also expressed confidence that the current Venezuelan administration could rebuff a coup attempt in the country. "I am sure that the legitimately elected authorities in Caracas can repel another attack and defend the Venezuelan constitutional system," Slutsky said.
The Venezuelan opposition earlier posted a video in social media that shows the opposition leader Juan Guaido speaking at the La Carlota air base and claiming to be supported by numerous members of the army.
