DUSHANBE. May 16 (Interfax) - Tajikistan condemns the activities of international terrorist organizations and supports the United Nations' efforts to combat terrorism and extremism in Central Asia, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon said on Thursday.
"Tajikistan condemns international terrorism and extremism and supports the soonest possible implementation of the Global UN Counter Terrorism Strategy in Central Asia," the presidential press service quoted Rahmon as saying.
Rahmon met with Under-Secretary-General for the UN Counter-Terrorism Office Vladimir Voronkov in Dushanbe on Thursday to discuss security and factors influencing stability in the region. The sides also reaffirmed the need for a political settlement for Afghanistan and the need to counter a surge in activities of militants of Islamic State (ISIL, banned in Russia) in northern Afghanistan.
The meeting was held on the sidelines of the High-Level Conference "International and Regional Cooperation on Countering Terrorism and Its Financing."
