NEW YORK CITY (UN). May 21 (Interfax) - Russian Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzya has described the blocking of the UN Security Council's debate on the Ukrainian language law as a manifestation of double standards.
"Regretfully, some delegations have manifested double standards regarding the UN Security Council's debate on the Ukrainian language law. We realize that this issue is discomforting for you, because you cannot find an excuse for your Kyiv proteges," Nebenzya said
On Monday, most members of the UN Security Council turned down Russia's call for discussing the Ukrainian language law.
Five members voted for the debate, six were against, and four abstained.
Representatives of France, Germany, and the United States said they would block the meeting as ill-timed. Nebenzya criticized their stance.
Russia initiated a Monday meeting of the UN Security Council on the law "On the Provision of the Functioning of the Ukrainian Language as the Official Language."
