MOSCOW. May 24 (Interfax) - Sending 1,500 American troops to the Middle East is yet another attempt to intimidate Iran, which increases tension and destabilizes the situation in the region, according to Vladimir Dzhabarov, first deputy head of the foreign affairs committee in the Federation Council.
"Some 1,500 people are unlikely to restrain Iran, if something happens. Most likely, this is yet another attempt to intimidate Iran," Dzhabarov told Interfax on Friday.
In his view, this would lead to a rise in regional tensions.
"That the escalation will be rising is clear. This is yet another unpredictability on the part of Mr. Trump. Previously he stated that America was pulling out of the Middle East. Now he himself is reinforcing the U.S. presence. Unfortunately, this only destabilizes the situation," Dzhabarov said.
Earlier on Friday U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed his decision to send 1,500 extra troops to the Middle East.
