MOSCOW. May 27 (Interfax) - The Admiral Gorshkov frigate of Russia's Northern Sea Fleet has held an exercise in searching for submarines in the central Pacific Ocean, southeast of Hawaiian Islands, the fleet's press service said.
"During the exercise the Admiral Gorshkov frigate crew practiced submarine searches using onboard hydroacoustics and deck-based aviation - the anti-submarine helicopter [Kamov] Ka-27," the statement said.
During the flight the helicopter practiced using a submersible sonar station. At some stages of the exercise, the ship's torpedo and mine combat crews practiced forcing a submarine to surface and deploying the whole range of anti-submarine weaponry.
The air defense, live-fire and vessel-rescue exercise will last for several days, the press service said.
The Northern Fleet's squadron of ships and vessels departed Severomorsk on February 26.
As well as Admiral Gorshkov, it includes the multipurpose technical support vessel Elbrus, medium-sized oil tanker Kama, and rescue tug Nikolai Chiker. In all the squadron has sailed over 20,200 nautical miles since embarking on the journey.
For the Admiral Gorshkov frigate this deployment is its first. The frigate has already paid visits to the ports of Djibouti and Colombo and was at Qingdao to take part in festivities on the occasion of the Chinese Navy's 70th anniversary.
