NUR-SULTAN. June 18 (Interfax) - The Kazakh police detained around 4,000 people during recent unauthorized rallies in Nur-Sultan and Almaty, Kazakh Interior Minister Erlan Turgumbayev told reporters on Tuesday, adding that almost 1,000 of them have been sentenced to fines or arrested.
"Some 4,000 people were detained. Of them, 3,000 citizens were released after pledging not to do anything unlawful again. As many as 677 people were sentenced to administrative arrest, and another 305 were fined. That means administrative penalties were imposed on around 1,000 citizens," Turgumbayev said.
The Kazakh Prosecutor General's Office said earlier that administrative penalties had been imposed on 957 people and 670 had been arrested for taking part in unauthorized rallies.
