Armenian FM discusses Karabakh peace process in Washington DC before meeting with Azerbaijani counterpart

YEREVAN. June 19 (Interfax) - Armenian Foreign Minister Zohrab Mnatsakanyan has met with the co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group in Washington DC, the Armenian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The meeting took place ahead of Mnatsakanyan's talks with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov.

"The sides assessed the current status of the peace process in the context of the implementation of earlier agreements," the statement said.

Azerbaijan lost control of Nagorno-Karabakh and seven districts in the early 1990s as a result of a conflict with the Armenian population of the region and Armenia.

The peace process is being mediated by the OSCE Minsk Group, which was established in 1992 to search for ways of a peaceful settlement of the Karabakh conflict. The group comprises Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Finland and Turkey and is co-chaired by Russia, France, and the United States.
