Int'l community not to have any more diplomatic means to influence N. Korea if Pyongyang resumes nuclear tests - Russian Security Council (Part 2)

UFA. June 19 (Interfax) - The sanctions resources for influencing North Korea are virtually exhausted, Russian Deputy Security Council Secretary Alexander Venediktov said.

"The sanctions resources for influencing North Korea are virtually exhausted. The international community does not have any more diplomatic means to respond to possible termination by Pyongyang of the moratorium on nuclear missile tests," Venediktov told reporters on Wednesday.

"The solution of the Korean issue will be complicated by the election race in the United States, too," he said. "The United States is entering an active phase of the election race and any foreign policy concession will be regarded as a loss of authority in the eyes of voters," he said.

"We get the impression that they have decided to use the nuclear problem of the Korean Peninsula to achieve other tasks in Asia and the Pacific. That cannot facilitate the solution of the already difficult contradictions that exist on this track," Venediktov said.

The international community should pay attention to North Korea's needs, he said.

"We believe it is necessary to give more attention to the goals and tasks that are faced by Pyongyang and have an understanding for North Korea's priorities. In particular, it is necessary to understand that North Korea was earlier assured that the process would be gradual, and it was promised international security guarantees, too," Venediktov said.
