MOSCOW. July 3 (Interfax) - The obstinate refusal of a number of countries to recognize the world's multipolarity increases confrontation; the global development pattern needs an update, Russian President Vladimir Putin said.
"The modern world badly needs more cooperation, an open and free exchange of views, to build confidence and search for mutual understanding. Its global agenda is complicated and contradictory, filled with big challenges and real, not imaginable, threats, a response to which will only be effective if the whole international community comes to realize them," Putin said at the Development of Parliamentarianism forum in Moscow on Wednesday.
The world's transformation into a multipolar one is evident, he said.
"At the same time, some countries' stubborn reluctance to accept this new reality is leading to a rise in confrontation on our planet, to disregard for international law, and the undermining of strategic stability, all of which hinders our cooperation.
"By bringing notions such as nations' sovereignty and right to choose their own path back to the center of the discussion of an updated model of global development, we will be able to reach working agreements and adopt binding rules as well as declarations at international forums and summits."
Such rules must be based on respect for national interests and mutual responsibility, he said.
"For the whole global community, this will open new opportunities for efficient counteraction to international terrorism, drug trafficking, information security, and for removing trade and technological barriers impeding global growth," Putin said.
"[Such dialogue] will help us to continue to overcome the colossal development gap among the world's regions and the resulting immigration crisis. Billions of people on our planet are waiting for these issues to be resolved," Putin said.
