MOSCOW. July 22 (Interfax) - Russian Special Presidential Representative for the Middle East and Africa Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov and member of Sudan's Transitional Military Council (TMC) Salah Abdel Khaliq met at the Russian Foreign Ministry on Monday to discuss recent developments in the African country, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on its website.
During the meeting, the sides discussed the latest events in Sudan in the context of the agreement on the formation of an interim administration signed on July 15 between the TMC and the civilian opposition represented by the Forces of Freedom and Change.
"The Russian side has expressed support for the achieved agreements aimed at securing swift stabilization in friendly Sudan. It also emphasized the need to adhere to the principle of non-intervention in internal affairs and resolution of internal political conflicts on the basis of broad national dialogue," the statement said.
As reported earlier, the two sides - representatives of the military and the civilian opposition Forces of Freedom and Change - signed a political declaration, one of the two documents, as part of the deal on the formation of the Sovereign Council. The body will comprise five civilian representatives and the same number of military officials. The 11th member of the Council, who must be civilian, will be elected by consensus between the two sides. The second document, the Constitutional Declaration, is to be signed in the nearest future.
