MOSCOW. July 31 (Interfax) - A new infrastructure for military units will be built on the Kuril Islands, Russia's Eastern Military District Commander Lieut. Gen. Gennady Zhidko said.
"Special attention is given to providing comfortable living conditions to remote garrisons. The construction of two new dormitories is now being completed on the Kuril Islands, further modernization and development of these military cities is planned," Zhidkov said in an interview the Defense Ministry's official newspaper Krasnaya Zvezda published on Wednesday.
New military infrastructure facilities are now being modernized and built in the district, he said.
In general, "the construction and modernization of 319 buildings is planned "for 2019, he said.
"Construction and assembly work on special military infrastructure facilities that increase the district's military power is being done according to plan. The work on coastal infrastructure facilities of the Pacific Fleet is nearing completion in Vladivostok," he said.
According to earlier reports, Russia considerably increased its military group on the Kuril Islands.
