Pacific Fleet hydrographers to study Artic areas for adjusting navigation maps

PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY. Aug 1 (Interfax) - The Russian Pacific Fleet's hydrographic vessel Sever will go on a research mission in the Arctic, the fleet press service said in a statement on Thursday.

"The Sever will depart from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky for the Arctic in August. Fleet hydrographers will perform a series of hydrographic tasks, including by means of advanced instruments," the statement said.

They will be studying sea hydrology, make a detailed bottom survey, and map the Arctic coastline.

"In addition, the crew will accomplish surveying assignments to establish and update geographic coordinates of the baseline between the Chukchi and East Siberian seas. A number of research projects will be carried out off the Wrangel Island," the statement said.

Results of the two-month research will be used to continue adjustment of sea navigation maps and manuals.
