Russian Foreign Ministry criticizes U.S. for sanctions on Iran's foreign minister

MOSCOW. Aug 1 (Interfax) - By applying various kinds of sanctions, including on Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, the United States is driving itself into a dead end, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said.

"The U.S. is driving itself into a dead end. They have discarded and denied themselves the chance to use a broad spectrum of diplomatic resources and tools to resolve various issues and problems and left only one; namely, sanctions. This tool doesn't work," Zakharova told journalists on Thursday, commenting on the U.S. sanctions on Zarif.

The sanctions have fully discredited "both themselves and those who resort to them," Zakharova said. "When a great, big, and significant state in all senses uses unilateral sanctions as an element to resolve an issue, this indicates its admission that none of its other institutions is tenable," she said.
