Decision to set up UN commission to probe Syria attacks based on provocative idea of opponents of Syrian authorities - Russian Foreign Ministry

MOSCOW. Aug 1 (Interfax) - Moscow has reacted negatively to the UN Secretary-General setting up a UN Secretariat internal commission to investigate a series of attacks in Syria, and Idilb in particular.

"We know for sure that this idea, one of a provocative nature, was actively promoted by nations hostile towards the legitimate government of the Syrian Arab Republic and our efforts to eradicate the terror threat in that country and ensure its territorial integrity and sovereignty," the Russian Foreign Ministry stated on its website on Thursday.

The Syrian troops with Russian air support are carrying out "purely retaliatory and limited actions to neutralize terrorists and destroy their facilities," the ministry said. "Attempts to cast a shadow on these efforts, to discredit Damascus will doubtless be used later also for creating new obstacles in the way of political settlement," the statement said.
