Background radiation levels in Nyonoksa normal - authorities

MOSCOW. Aug 9 (Interfax) - Background radiation in the village of Nyonoksa, where an explosion occurred at a military test and training range on Thursday, is normal, Valentin Magomedov, head of civil defense in the town administration, said.

"Background radiation levels both in the town and in Nyonoksa today are normal. There's nothing else to add," Magomedov told Interfax on Friday.

A day earlier the website of the Severodvinsk administration stated, citing Magomedov, that there was a brief surge in background radiation in Severodvinsk.

The explosion, which killed two people and injured six, occurred during testing of a jet propulsion unit, the defense ministry said.

Last night the governor of the Arkhangelsk region, Igor Orlov, told Interfax that background radiation was currently within the normal range.

On Friday Orlov told Interfax that some of the injured were moved to specialized clinics, including those in other cities.
