MOSCOW. Aug 9 (Interfax) - Five helipads have been installed on the Gogland Island in the Gulf of Finland by airfield engineers from the Leningrad Air Force and Air Defense Army, the helidrome can receive all types of combat and transport helicopters, the Western Military District said on Wednesday.
"The helidrome created on the Gogland Island includes five helipads and necessary infrastructure," the district said in a statement obtained by Interfax.
The infrastructure consists of a command and traffic-control center, a weather station, a refueling complex, a technical maintenance center, and special lighting.
"The helidrome can accept all types of transport and combat helicopters in service of the Western Military District," the statement said.
The helipads were installed during tactical-special exercises, the district's headquarters said. A Mil Mi-26 helicopter brought in from St. Petersburg a set of metal aerodrome slabs and necessary special hardware.
"The army aviation crews of the Leningrad Air Force and Air Defense Army have practiced landings and takeoffs from the new helidrome," the headquarters said.
