MOSCOW. Aug 12 (Interfax) - Mourning events in commemoration of the Kursk submarine crew have taken place in the Northern Fleet, the fleet's press service told Interfax.
"Solemn mourning events took place on board ships and submarines and at coastal units of the Northern Fleet. The flags flew at half-mast and a minute of silence was announced at 11:28 a.m. (the time when the blast occurred on board the submarine)," the press service said.
Mourning events were also held at the memorials in the Northern Fleet garrisons in Murmansk and Severomorsk, Polyarny and in Severodvinsk and at the nuclear submarine bases in Vidyayevo, Gadzhiyevo, and Zaozersk.
The Kursk nuclear missile submarine under the command of Capt. 1st Rank Gennady Lyachin sank in the Barents Sea, 175 kilometers away from Severomorsk, at the depth of 108 meters in the incident on August 12, 2000. All of the 118 crewmembers and seconded specialists on board died.
